Is Acclivity still an option for MYOB Users?
top
The short answer is ‘yes’. As you have probably seen, until now we have promoted Acclivity products on our Simple Accounting Website. Acclivity was a management takeover of MYOB US. The Acclivity products are an upgraded version of the MYOB we all know and love. The products look beautiful and in these upgraded versions many of the irritating aspects of earlier MYOB version have been ironed out. Several clients and contacts of this firm are using Acclivity software very successfully. It is particularly useful for larger PC networks.

A recent posting on the PC Pro Website by Tom Nash at Acclivity LLC has alerted us to the possibility that Acclivity may take legal action against us. They are unhappy that we are offering users a link on our website to the trial version of the Canadian Acclivity AccountEdge (for PCs).

We have therefore decided to remove the link on our website to the trial version. If you wish to trial it you have on more week – go to our Acclivity Trial. If there are MYOB users in the UK who are considering Acclivity and can buy it from North America we will do our best to help them. Just contact us on 01422 847500. We will show you the software. Existing users can provide you with a reference for how their conversion has gone since they imported the software.

Reality of Self-Employed Contracts top

A recent case heard in the highest UK court (the Supreme Court) may affect whether workers are defined as employees, and hence whether they are entitled to employee rights and whether the employer has to pay them under PAYE. The case was called Autoclenz Ltd v Belcher.

Autoclenz Ltd required its workers to be self-employed contractors and issued contracts to those workers, which they were required to sign in order to be offered any further work by the company. The company provided the workers with all the tools and materials they needed, but deducted a 5% charge for use of those tools and materials from the invoices it prepared on behalf of its ‘self-employed’ workers.

The workers were paid so badly that they made claims to the employment tribunal to be paid the national minimum wage and holiday pay. The tribunal agreed the workers were employees in spite of the contracts they were required to sign. When the case reached the Supreme Court it found that the written contracts were a sham and did not reflect the reality of the relationship between the workers and the company
The MYOB user group continues to grow – it now has 91 members. If you want to carry on using your existing MYOB datafile join the MYOB Users Group!

We believe that anyone with a valid MYOB licence (from version 13 to version 18) should be able to carry on using their software. We are therefore supporting the MYOB User Group to help users at this difficult time. The User Group is an incorporated Association, ‘MYOB Users Ltd’ and is funded entirely by MYOB users through an annual membership fee.

One of the main benefits of joining the User Group is that it will regularly give access to confirmation codes. These will allow users to carry on using their software beyond December 2011. The Association holds a program (securely) that calculates these codes. The codes must be renewed every three months. The Association asks all those seeking to become a member for evidence of their licence.

The MYOB User Group also provides user support by email and telephone. It has set up user forums so people can discuss and help each other with MYOB related issues.

The User Group has been set up as a not-for-profit however it does need some income so it can provide its services. Membership costs oly £35 per year.

We hope you consider joining – just go to www.myobusergroup.co.uk

November Question & Answer Section top
Before you can reclaim VAT on goods and services you have bought you need to check the following:

1. The purchase was for business purposes – not for your personal needs.
2. The purchase is not a type that is ‘blocked’ for VAT reclaims, such as entertaining expenses.
3. You have a valid VAT invoice.

A valid VAT invoice should include all of the following details: Read More
Q. I left London on 5 May 2010 to work full time for a Danish company in Copenhagen. My own UK-based company ceased at that time, and I received a capital payment on 30 November 2010. As I received that money after I left the UK permanently, do I have to pay UK tax on the pay-out? Answer

Q. I’ve received an alarming letter from the Taxman about a private bank account I held in Switzerland from 2000 to 2005. I didn’t include the interest from that account on my tax return as I thought it wasn’t taxable in the UK. What should I do now? Answer

Q. The Taxman has hit me with a huge penalty for paying my company’s PAYE late in 2010/11. But I’ve always paid my PAYE on time. What’s going on? Answer
